DPW’s Archaeological Excavation

The archaeological excavation work is well underway within the Henry Street bridge right of way in the limits of the former Greenlawn Cemetery, and Indy DPW is committed to keeping the public informed of its progress.

This page provides insights into the discoveries of grave shafts and artifacts and is updated weekly. The Greenlawn site has a complex history of past disturbances and will require time for the archaeologists and historians to properly document, analyze, and interpret each discovery. The City is committed to exploring additional ways to share information related to this site’s history in the coming months and years, including the release of a public report after reinterment.

The gallery below highlights some of the artifacts that have been uncovered and catalogued by archaeologists.

*The City does not anticipate being able to share the number of individuals uncovered until after the excavation is complete and osteological research has occurred.

Please note that “grave shaft” does not mean the Minimum Number of Individuals, or MNI. Determining the MNI requires additional research and analysis.
